The hill resort of Saputara is refreshing throughout the year with its cool weather. Saputara does not experience any extreme temperature variations, and is an ideal getaway for the sun-scorched souls of the plains. The monsoon rains add to the magic of Saputara. Also known as the Saputara tribal museum, it has an assortment of ornaments, artefacts, wooden carvings, body tattoos, ritual objects and musical instruments that depict the rich culture and lifestyle of the local tribes. The museum is considered to be a great initiative by the government of Gujarat to introduce the travellers to the splendid heritage of Dang’s native people. Besides, the museum also educates its visitors about other facets of the Dang, like its ecology and geography.
Geography:
Saputara is situated in the Dang district of Gujarat. This beautiful hill station is situated at an elevation of about 1000m above sea level. It is located on a plateau in the Dang forest area. Adding to the beauty of Saputara is the River Sarpganga which flows through the town. The hill retreat is situated about 80kms from Nashik (Maharashtra), 112kms from Bilimora (Gujarat), 172kms from Surat (Gujarat), 280kms from Mumbai (Maharashtra), 300kms from Vadodra (Gujarat) and 420kms from Ahmedabad (Gujarat). The temperature in summer goes up to a maximum of 32°C and a minimum of 27°C. In winter, on the other hand the temperature remains between 16°C and 10°C. Saputara in monsoon receives an average rainfall (from July to September) of 254 cm.
History:
Saputara has mythological importance as it is believed that Lord Rama spent 11 years of his exile here. The name Saputara literally means ‘Abode of Serpents’ and one can find an image of a snake situated on the shore of the river Sarpganga that flows through the town.
